It’s been awhile. But it’s finally here — Optimum Nutrition’s Cake Batter Review.
Winning last time’s poll (vote on the right hand side-bar now!), I followed through and got myself a 5lb tub. Unfortunately, that’s the only size they have.
Going into this review, I wasn’t expecting much.
And with a flavor like Cake Batter, there really isn’t much to expect. It’s exactly like what it sounds — a battered mix of ingredients used to bake a cake. That being flour, eggs, sugar, milk, and a bit of vanilla.
Here’s how it turned out…
Cake Batter Review: Water
Like always, I first tried it with a cup of water.
But before tasting it, I took a whiff of the container. It smelled like any other vanilla-flavored Optimum Nutrition protein powder. Nothing new.
I then mixed it in my shaker cup and took a sip…
The first word that popped into my mind was boring. Cake Batter tastes almost no different from their other flavors which is disappointing.
It’s a vanilla-dominant flavor with a small hint of an actual baked cake. It’s not bad, but it’s not good either. Just boring.
Now, this might not be true for you.
Keep in mind, I’ve tried almost all of Optimum Nutrition’s flavors. So it’s easy to see why I called it boring. It tastes similar to their Vanilla Ice Cream, French Vanilla Creme, Cake Donut, and Birthday Cake.
If you haven’t tried those before, then Cake Batter might be worth a try. And if you have, then you won’t be trying anything new. They’re almost all the same except for a few subtleties.
Now let’s see how it tastes in milk…
Cake Batter Review: Milk
With milk, Optimum Nutrition Cake Batter takes a turn for the better.
But still, it’s not something to go crazy over.
It’s a sweet and creamy vanilla milkshake. Something we, as people who love their protein shakes, should already be very familiar with. It might be good to mention now that Cake Batter also has creamer listed as an ingredient, which is the first time I’ve ever come across something like this. Optimum Nutrition always has tricks up their sleeves to make their protein powder standout.
But still, if you were to give me this shake, then another with a different vanilla flavored protein powder, I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. Cake Batter is as simple as it gets.
Like I said before, this doesn’t mean that it tastes bad, but there are much better options than this.
Cake Batter Review: Milk & Banana
Up next is Cake Batter with milk and a banana.
Can you guess how this tastes based on what you just read?
If you guessed it tasted like any regular vanilla banana milkshake, then you’re correct.
The subtleties that make this flavor taste like real cake batter disappear once a banana is thrown in the mix. The banana does make all the difference however. Extra creaminess, sweetness, and overall, a tasty shake you will look forward to after a rigorous workout.
Cake Batter After A Few Weeks
After a few weeks, Cake Batter became unpalatable.
I couldn’t withstand drinking it anymore. Similar to their Vanilla Ice Cream flavor, it began to taste sickeningly sweet and artificial.
Keep in mind, this is only with water.
With water, Cake Batter leaves a foul taste in my mouth.
But with milk or a banana, Cake Batter is fine. I can drink it all day long.
Optimum Nutrition Cake Batter Review
Cake Batter is terrible at worst, and boring at best. I actually regret buying this flavor knowing how many of their other flavors taste so much better.
And because it can’t taste good with just water, there’s no way I would get this flavor again. Especially knowing how much worse it gets when I keep drinking it.
If you’re curious to find out how Cake Batter tastes because you want to try something new, then by all means try it. You might just want to avoid drinking it with water all the time.
Like Vanilla Ice Cream, another flavor of theirs which I consider the worst, I would rank Cake Batter down there as well.

P.S. I highly recommend French Vanilla Creme as an alternative to Cake Batter.

Hi, Darren.
Indeed, it’s been awhile, but I am glad to see you’re Ok – was worried due to your “silence”.
To tell you the truth, I’ve been waiting for this particular review with great anticipation, and you probably know the reason. 🙂 So, without further ado, my question is – have you tried adding this flavour to pastry? As I mentioned before, I do like baking (pies and bread mostly), but there is a problem – vast majority of other ON’s flavours are way too pronounced to be subtle in certain types of pastry where I do not need them. I mean I totally adore ON’s chocolate/coffee flavours as drinks, and as sweetener in “sweet” cakes or pies, but in some types of pastry their flavours are too off and “alien”. Pronounced vanilla of “more vanilla” flavours as well – it’s not the taste I’d want to get with meat/veggies pies, for example.
As ironic as it may seem, finding unflavoured protein powder is tricky: you either had to rely on raw whey bulk bag (20 kilos, no less, good luck drinking that with average 1 year shelf-life), or find manufacturer who not only sells unflavoured variety, but one that has good flavour. As it seems to be a bit of a challenge, I am searching among products from tried manufacturer, for most subtle flavour. As I have to order it from abroad – seems no one is interested in this one, I’d like to know before ordering it. Besides, there is literally no one describing flavours better than you do.
Again, thank you for your work, and best of all.

Great review , what chocolate flavor is the best syntha 6 , myofusion or gold standard extreme milk chocolate?
Darren Wong says
Hey Salim,
Thanks for your comment.
Of the three, I’ve only tried Gold Standard Extreme Milk Chocolate (see my full review here).
It’s definitely one of the best chocolate flavors I’ve tried. It lives up to its name in all its chocolatey goodness. I highly recommend it.
