Today, I review one of the worst Optimum Nutrition flavors. It has received low ratings, bad comments, and almost nothing positive to be said about it.
This flavor is Optimum Nutrition Cake Donut.
Because of it’s horrible ratings, I decided to try it out for myself. Obviously, not the smart thing to do. But I did it just to see if what everyone hated about it was true.
And guess what? It wasn’t.
Now, you’re probably wondering what is Cake Donut anyway.
Cake Donut is nothing more than a regular plain donut. No frosting, no sprinkles, no creamy sugary fillings. Or in other words, a donut that nobody would never buy.
As you can expect, this doesn’t sound appetizing.
But I can tell you, this does have something unique about it.
Here’s my first impression
Cake Donut Review: Water
This was not as bad as I expected it to be. However, it’s not the best either. I thought it would taste terrible, but it tastes almost exactly like what it says.
In the beginning, you get a slight vanilla flavor. Then after letting it linger in your mouth, you can really taste that donut flavor. Like taking a bite out of a soft, doughy donut.
But that’s not the best part.
The best part was the aftertaste.
Remember I said there’s something unique about this? This is it. After downing a sip or two, a delightful trace of cinnamon and nutmeg is left on your tongue. Reminding you of the warm, cozy indoors during the holiday season.
Now, this is unusual for a protein powder. But it definitely gives it a real, authentic taste of a donut. How? Because these two spices are used to make real ones!
Talk about creativity coming from Optimum Nutrition.
Overall, this was a good first impression. Let’s take a look at how this pairs with milk…
Cake Donut Review: Milk
With milk, it tastes alright.
Nothing nasty, but nothing special either.
It’s definitely better than drinking it with water, but not by a lot. With milk, it’s almost no different than drinking a normal vanilla milkshake. The spices are still there, but a bit faded out.
The good thing about this was the added sweetness and creaminess.
But the Cake Donut itself, wasn’t as strong as it was with water.
Cake Donut Review: Milk & Banana
As everybody knows, a banana adds a lot more flavor and thickness to a protein shake. But for Cake Donut, it just didn’t work as well.
Yes, it’s sweeter, thicker, and tastier.
However, the banana completely overshadows the Cake Donut flavor and leaves you with a simple banana milkshake.
But don’t get me wrong…
It tastes good. I just see no point in using a protein powder (other than the protein of course) if you can’t even taste it.
Cake Donut Review: Peanut Butter
Lastly, I tried it with (chunky) peanut butter.
And to my surprise, this became my favorite way to prepare it.
Imagine sinking your teeth into a donut with a smooth peanut butter spread on top. That’s what you get with this combination. And it works absolutely wonderfully.
Because Cake Donut isn’t an overpowering taste, and neither is peanut butter, you get the best of both worlds. You can taste both ingredients equally.
You get the spices from the Cake Donut, and the rich nutty taste from the peanut butter.
So if you’re going to get Cake Donut, you might want to skip the milk and banana. And only drink it with peanut butter or water.
Or try this recipe…

Because Cake Donut is such a straightforward flavor, it works great in recipes.
Here’s a quick and easy one from Optimum Nutrition themselves, showing you how to make delicious home-baked cookies:
All you’ll need is Optimum Nutrition Cake Donut, peanut butter (remember what I said about this going super well with peanut butter?), and an egg.
Cake Donut After A Few Weeks
Most protein powders go bad after a while. But a good one can keep its taste all throughout. And Cake Donut is one of those few.
After a few weeks, it doesn’t taste any different.
Now is that a good or bad thing? It depends on if you like it or not. But it sure is better than the flavor becoming worse.
Optimum Nutrition Cake Donut Review
Overall, Cake Donut is not bad of a flavor.
If I had to describe it in just one word, it would be boring. But what do you expect? The flavor is named after, and tastes just like a plain donut. There’s nothing much to it.
However, the cinnamon and nutmeg is definitely a great touch. If you like the subtle taste of these spices, you’ll quickly fall in love with Cake Donut.
Cake Donut is sort of an acquired taste. I never ran into a protein powder like this one.
But the big question is: would I buy it again?
The answer is no.
There’s just not enough flavor in this protein powder to keep me satisfied. Vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg is all you get. But as the name states, you can imagine how well this works in making protein pancakes, muffins, cookies, or even a donut.
