Looking for a good-tasting protein powder?
But don’t know if Optimum Nutrition’s Chocolate Malt flavor is the one?
Then keep reading.
In this Optimum Nutrition Chocolate Malt Review, you’re going to find out how it tastes in water, milk, and with a banana. So you can decide for yourself whether this flavor is worth trying.
(Hint: It is)
It’s been awhile since I wrote a review. But I’m glad it’s this one because people don’t talk much about Chocolate Malt, when it’s in fact a good flavor.
So without wasting another second, let’s start with how Chocolate Malt tastes with water…
Chocolate Malt Review: Water
For those who don’t know what Chocolate Malt is to begin with, don’t worry. I didn’t either. But I did have an idea.
The first thing that came to mind when I thought of Chocolate Malt was the candy, Whoppers.
Optimum Nutrition Chocolate Malt tastes like Whoppers
If you know what these are, you don’t need further explanation on how this protein powder tastes as it tastes almost exactly like it.
But if you don’t know what these are, here’s what Chocolate Malt literally is.
Chocolate Malt is chocolate (obviously) and malt. Malt is a powder made from barley, flour, and evaporated milk.
Now before you start thinking, “Barley/flour flavored protein powder?” that’s not what it is. Malt is a difficult taste to describe. It has a sweet, yet earthy toasted flavor. It’s an acquired taste. You either love it or hate it (I clearly love it). The second you try it, you’ll know exactly what it is. It’s very distinct.
And in this Chocolate Malt whey, you’ll get a taste of it.
Preparing my first shake of this protein powder, I had high expectations. Not because I’ve read/heard others saying it was good. But because from my experience, Optimum Nutrition’s chocolate flavors are always great.
So what about this one?
Optimum Nutrition Chocolate Malt with water
Taking my first sip of one scoop of Chocolate Malt mixed in a glass of cold water was delicious. It has the creamy chocolaty richness similar to Optimum Nutrition Extreme Milk Chocolate, with a subtle malt flavor in the back, and a slight powdery texture. Unlike any flavor on the market, this is one you’ll want to keep with you at all times.
Especially when you find out how it tastes with milk…
Chocolate Malt Review: Milk
Optimum Nutrition Chocolate Malt with milk is addictive.
Going into this shake, again, I had a pretty good idea of how it’ll turn out – delicious.
And I was right.
Optimum Nutrition Chocolate Malt with milk
With a glass of cold milk and another scoop of Chocolate Malt, what I got was a creamy, rich chocolate malted milkshake. And if you didn’t know, that’s actually a thing.
There are hundreds and thousands of recipes online on how to make the perfect one. These recipes usually include vanilla/chocolate ice cream, milk, and malted milk powder.
Can you see how the shake I made can taste just like it now?
My shake contained milk, chocolate flavor to replace the ice cream, and malt flavor to replace the malted milk powder.
Now of course, it’s not going to taste just like the real thing. But if you want something like it without all the calories and sugar, just mix a cup of milk with a scoop of Optimum Nutrition Chocolate Malt.
But what if I tossed a banana into the mix?
Would it taste even better?
Let’s find out…
Chocolate Malt Review: Milk & Banana
Chocolate Malt with milk is good.
I’m not sure if you’ll want to add a banana though.
Why?
Optimum Nutrition Chocolate Malt with milk and banana
When mixing all these three ingredients together, it seemed promising. You have the Chocolate Malt flavor from the protein powder, the creamy richness from the milk, and you also have the creamy, thick texture and sweetness from the banana. How could this possibly go wrong?
Well, it did.
Not terribly wrong, but not as good as you’d expect.
This shake was very sweet which I liked. It even had a nice thick texture to it like it was a real milkshake. But the problem with it is you can’t taste the malt anymore.
This usually happens with Optimum Nutrition flavors like Chocolate Mint and Chocolate Coconut, where the dominant flavor stays, but the secondary flavor disappears. But don’t take this to mean it tastes bad.
It’s deliciously sweet.
You just don’t get the full Chocolate Malt taste.
Chocolate Malt After A Few Weeks
After a few weeks of drinking Optimum Nutrition Chocolate Malt, I got a bit tired of it.
Remember, Chocolate Malt has a distinctive, acquired taste.
And for me, it got boring over time.
It didn’t taste worse. I just didn’t have the urge or excitement to continue drinking it anymore.
At some point, this flavor just tasted like plain ol’ chocolate.
Optimum Nutrition Chocolate Malt Review
Optimum Nutrition Chocolate Malt is a delicious flavor.
You’re either going to go crazy over it, or you’re going to hate it.
A good way to find out which side you’ll be on before you spend your money is if you like chocolate malt candies such as Whoppers.
If you do, this protein powder will satisfy you like no other.
It tastes good with nearly anything. Even a simple glass of water. And as I always say, if a protein powder can taste good with just water, it’s a protein powder worth buying.
What also makes a protein powder worth buying is if it tastes close to the real thing. And when it comes to Chocolate Malt, it does. I’m always surprised at how they do it, but they do.
Compared to other Optimum Nutrition flavors though, I wouldn’t say this is one of their best. But it’s definitely better than most of the others.

Hi, Darren.
Or, rather given the worldwide craze due to some cowboy-themed game release – should I say “Howdy”?:)
Actually my first thought when I read headline was “Yay, finally!”. Yes, Chocolate Malt is one of my favourite flavours from ON (and, therefore, from any other brand, as I think ON’s flavourists (or what’s the name for specialists who mix flavours?) are among the best in the world of sport nutrition), and honestly, it may be more favourable than Mocha Cappuccino for me. Yeah, maybe a bit heretical thing to say, but what can I do – I like it a lot. Although I do drink it with water most of the time.
As I haven’t even seen Whoopers, I cannot confirm or deny your reference, but to be honest, before I bought Chocolate Malt flavour Protein I didn’t even knew what this thing actually is and that such thing even exists (yet again, I am no expert in beverages:)). I know what malt is, but that’s all. Chocolate Malt Whey marketed here as “chocolate”, everybody seems to be ignoring “Malt” part probably because original beverage is not widely known. While I still haven’t seen any “ordinary” beverage under this name, I am more than glad I got ON with this flavour. Not sure if I recommended you to try it in comments, but I surely voted for it.
I’d say it is less sweet & pronounced “chocolatey” if compared to Extreme Milk Chocolate, yet it is a bit more… cacao-like? Not sure you have those in States, but here Nesquik drink is quite popular. If flavours of Nesquiks are the same at both banks of Grand Pond, then I’d say it is the only similarity I can get, only again – less sweet, even if you dilute Nesquik with water, not milk. For me it tastes just right.
tl;dr, This is one of my favourite flavours at all and I gladly recommend to try it to anyone who can handle cacao family flavours. Sadly it’s quite rare here for some strange reason, so I have to look out for it.
As usual, keep out the good work and stay safe.
