This is a good one. Requested by many of you, here’s your Optimum Nutrition Chocolate Mint Review…
Before we get into it though, I must warn you.
I hate chocolate mint.
Yes, I said it. I hate it. I really do. Whether it’s a chocolate mint cookie, chocolate mint ice cream, or whatever, I don’t like any of them.
So going into this protein powder review, I had very low expectations.
In fact, I was even unhappy to see Optimum Nutrition Chocolate Mint win the poll from last time. But I decided to buy it anyways and throw up this review.
So without further ado, let’s get started…
Chocolate Mint Review: Water
Like always, water is first.
But before that, I twisted off the lid and took a huge whiff inside. To my surprise, it was pleasant. You really get that chocolate mint scent like you would with other things of this flavor.
I then poured a scoop with about 8oz of water. Mixed it. Took a sip. And in fact, loved it!
How could that be?
Well, luckily for me, like I said before, I hate mint. And unfortunately for you mint lovers, there’s just not much of a mint taste to this protein powder.
The chocolate completely dominates it, and tastes very similar to Optimum Nutrition Double Rich Chocolate.
Rich, creamy, and sweet.
For taste alone, this is delicious. But if you’re expecting a nice balance of chocolate and mint, you might be disappointed.
With milk, it’s a different story…
Chocolate Mint Review: Milk
As a good start with just water, milk tastes even better.
And this time, the mint is very much detectable. It’s weird, but it’s definitely more prominent than with water. Maybe the vanilla of the milk brings it out more?
Anyways, all you need to know is you will definitely taste a lot of it…
With milk, this protein powder is sweet and simple. Imagine taking a bite out of a refrigerated chocolate brownie mint cookie. That’s almost exactly what you’ll taste.
The chocolate and mint is perfectly balanced. You get a sweet taste of both. And to top it off, it’s super creamy.
There’s really not much to hate about it. And keep in mind, this is coming from a chocolate mint hater.
Chocolate Mint Review: Milk & Banana
Usually, adding a banana makes everything taste even better. That’s not true with this though…
There’s only a few I’ve come across that the above was the case. Banana Cream being one of them. But this doesn’t mean it tastes bad.
What it does mean, however, is the mint disappears. This was expected though with a banana tossed into the mix.
What you get then is simply a chocolate banana milkshake.
Super sweet, thick, and creamy.
Nothing too special or different about it. But overall, still delicious.
Chocolate Mint Review: Peanut Butter
I didn’t think this was a good idea. But I did it anyway.
Chocolate, mint, and peanut butter just doesn’t sound like a good combination. Turns out, I’m wrong.
I mixed one serving (2 tablespoons) of peanut butter with a scoop of protein, and mixed it all in water.
Again, not much mint. But when mixed together, the chocolate and peanut butter are a match made in heaven. As you can probably already imagine having eaten some candies or cookies.
Although not the best of everything above, this is one I can fall back on when I have no other option.
Chocolate Mint After A Few Weeks
After drinking this consistently for the past few weeks, I ran into no problems.
The flavor stayed the same and I never got tired of it, even though I don’t like chocolate mint.
For the majority of those weeks, I also drank it with water.
Typically, most protein powders will turn disgusting. But this is the exception. Chocolate Mint tasted great every single time.
Optimum Nutrition Chocolate Mint Review
For something I usually avoid, Optimum Nutrition Chocolate Mint is a winner. This doesn’t mean it’s perfect though. There’s just one problem…
The mint in this protein powder isn’t strong enough.
Only when it’s mixed with milk, or if you mix more protein than liquid (e.g. 2 scoops/6oz water), will you really get that lovely chocolate mint taste.
Other than that, if you were thinking about buying this protein powder, then you’re in for a treat.
Chocolate Mint with milk is the best combination here.
And the best part is, this tastes great with just water alone too.
Knowing how many of you wanted me to review this flavor, you can now be rest assured that you were making the right choice. If I could update my top 5 best Optimum Nutrition flavor list, this would be at a #3.
So if you’re interested in giving Chocolate Mint a try, don’t waste another second.

Jack says
Their Mint Chocolate Chip was delicious. It also had a mild mint flavor and it had tiny pieces of chocolate chip cookies in it. It was one of their best shakes, in my opinion. Unfortunately, it was discontinued by the company.
