Optimum Nutrition Delicious Strawberry was my first protein powder…
Ever.
And I loved it.
I thought I found one of the best tasting protein powders on the market (at least compared to the Muscle Milk protein shakes I – and everyone else – used to drink).
But this was over 5 years ago.
With all the Optimum Nutrition flavor reviews I’ve done now, I’m sure my opinion is going to change.
So today, I’m going to revisit this flavor and see if my love for it still stands by trying it with water, milk, and a banana.
Let’s begin…
Delicious Strawberry Review: Water
When I got my tub of Optimum Nutrition Delicious Strawberry, I couldn’t help but notice how familiar it smelled.
It was nostalgic.
But what’s important here is the taste.
I quickly prepared myself a shake with one scoop of protein and a glass of water. And I couldn’t believe it…
It was nothing like I remembered.
The first time I tried it, I remember how delicious it was. I thought I found the cream of the crop of protein powders.
But what I got now was an artificial strawberry taste. Or more accurately, bubblegum flavored medicine.
I’m sure this doesn’t sound appealing at all. But it’s not as bad as it sounds. However, it’s also not as good either. It’s just fine.
It does have a creamy consistency that I love though.
And this gives me hope for the next taste test…
Delicious Strawberry Review: Milk
I mixed one scoop of Delicious Strawberry with one cup of whole milk.
But like with water, I wasn’t too impressed.
Delicious Strawberry with milk
It did taste better, but there was still something missing…
I expected a sweet and creamy strawberry milk-like shake. Similar to how Optimum Nutrition’s chocolate flavors mixed with milk taste like a delicious chocolate milk. But with Delicious Strawberry, this wasn’t the case…
You do get the creamy milk consistency of course. But the flavor was still average.
Usually, what happens when you mix protein powders with milk is the flavor gets enhanced. This, however, stayed the same. The strawberry still tasted like how it was with water – artificial and medicine-like.
What would’ve made this flavor better was if it had the sweetness we typically expect from a strawberry flavor. You know, the juiciness and tartness of a ripe berry. Without it though, this flavor wasn’t as delicious as the name says it is.
I still had hopes for it though…
Delicious Strawberry Review: Milk & Banana
Why did I still have my hopes up?
Because we all know strawberry and banana mix well together.
But not only that, when I first had Delicious Strawberry years ago, I can vividly remember how amazing this shake was. I loved it so much I’d only ever drink it like this.
So I quickly tossed a scoop of Delicious Strawberry, a cup of milk, and one large banana into my Nutribullet blender. Blended it smooth and took a sip, and it was delicious!
Delicious Strawberry with milk and banana
It had a good strawberry banana taste with a super creamy texture.
But to my surprise, it didn’t taste how I remembered. The strawberry of the protein powder still left an artificial aftertaste in my mouth. Not as strong as before, but it lingered.
I don’t know whether it’s because I have poor memory, or because Optimum Nutrition changed the recipe, but this did not meet my expectations.
And to top it all off, while I was preparing this shake, I accidentally spilled it all over the floor as I was trying to toss in more ice cubes. Almost as if a supernatural force was trying to stop me from drinking it (who knows).
Overall though, this was definitely better than with water or milk alone.
Delicious Strawberry After A Few Weeks
After a few weeks of drinking Delicious Strawberry, I was tired of it.
It didn’t taste worse or better. It was simply boring. And it wasn’t the best flavor to begin with.
The artificial strawberry taste is just too overpowering for me.
But don’t let my single opinion turn you away. I know others who are in love with Delicious Strawberry and actually find the “artificial” taste to be tasty.
Again, it’s almost like a bubblegum medicine. And I’m sure you know someone (maybe yourself) who likes that.
Optimum Nutrition Delicious Strawberry Review
For a basic flavor such as Delicious Strawberry, I’m a bit disappointed in how it turned out.
Even though it brought back fond memories since it was the first protein powder I tried, it’s not something I’d buy again. Why?
Because it doesn’t taste good in just water. Let alone, milk.
For me to continue drinking Delicious Strawberry, I’d have to always drink it with milk and a banana to mask its medicine-like taste. But even then, it’s still present in the background.
For others though, they don’t seem to have a problem with it. In fact, they enjoy it very much.
Delicious Strawberry is definitely a polarizing flavor.

Hello, Darren.
Hm, I wonder what changed the flavour? Judging by Amazon review scores, many people complain recently (≈ 9 months by my estimation) over distorted flavours and/or changed “recipe”, without specifying exactly what they are meaning. Some even blame lack of Aminogen®. But there is something I don’t get. As I told before, recently I bought two five-pounders with Mocha Cappuccino, both manufactured this year (May, I think), already with “new” recipe, according to reviews and ON representative’s own words. But for me it tastes exactly as the old one – tub from 2016 I am finishing currently. Besides, I doubt it is Aminogen (or lack thereof), as ON is the only Whey that had it, all other I consumed didn’t.
Of course, as usual disclaimer goes, manufacturer has right to change product without forewarning, but the only answer I got from ON reps is that focus groups find no difference between shakes with and without Aminogen, therefore it was removed. As I’ve been told, nothing else changed.
Anyway, good to know, as I am not lover of “fruity-berry” flavours (mostly because very few tastes “about right”), but my “chocolatey-coffey” ones are not as frequent here as many other.
Keep up the good work and stay safe.
P.S. Hey, new design! Looks good;).
