This flavor is their basic chocolate protein powder. Nothing fancy, nothing new. But here’s the thing. I’ve tried many regular chocolate protein powders before, and if you did too, you can agree with me on this…
Most of them SUCK!
And it always makes me wonder how a simple flavor like chocolate can ever taste so horrible. But this isn’t the case for Double Rich Chocolate.
Before you find out how it tastes in water, milk, a banana, and peanut butter, let me say this…
If you’ve ever tried Optimum Nutrition Mocha Cappuccino or Extreme Milk Chocolate and thought they were good, you WILL love this too. They all have a lovely chocolate base, but this one takes a step back and gives you the original creamy, rich chocolate we all love.
So without wasting anymore time, let’s start with water…
Double Rich Chocolate Review: Water
As always, the first shake is with water. This tells you all you’ll need to know about a protein powder. Because if it’s good in water, it’s a flavor worth buying again and again.
And Double Rich Chocolate IS that flavor…
Not only is it very easy to mix with almost no foaming, this flavor is the one you’ve probably been searching for all this time. It lives up to its name, and offers you the richest, creamiest chocolate flavor of all protein powders you’ll try.
Like I said before, Double Rich Chocolate is similar to Extreme Milk Chocolate and Mocha Cappuccino. So if you tried and liked either one, you won’t be disappointed with this one. Double Rich Chocolate is just a little less sweeter than both.
Overall, I loved it from the start
But now let’s see how it tastes in milk…
Double Rich Chocolate Review: Milk
With such a simple flavor like chocolate, you can expect it tastes good with almost anything.
And it shouldn’t be a surprise what Double Rich Chocolate tastes like in milk.
It’ll send you straight back to your favorite drink as a child — chocolate milk.
But not like those chocolate milks filled with sugar to make them taste overly sweet.
Like with water, this is just sweet enough to satisfy your sweet tooth. And best of all, its creaminess is heavenly.
This is the type of shake you never get tired of. Of course, unless you hate chocolate. But you probably wouldn’t be reading this if you did. Although, I do think Double Rich Chocolate with milk would make a chocolate-hater reconsider.
Moving along, let’s toss a ripe banana to the mix…
Double Rich Chocolate Review: Milk & Banana
Again, what can possibly go wrong with this combination?
It’s creamier, thicker, AND sweeter.
Chocolate and bananas are simply one of the best and most classic combinations ever created. There’s thousands (maybe millions) of recipes combining the two. That’s clearly not a coincidence. And as you know, it’s because they compliment each other so well.
Just think about chocolate-covered bananas. That’s what you’ll get out of this shake.
Now that you know how good Double Rich Chocolate tastes with the three shakes above, there’s one last shake to cover…
Double Rich Chocolate Review: Peanut Butter
Another classic flavor – chocolate peanut butter. They’re a match made in heaven.
With Double Rich Chocolate and peanut butter, it’s super creamy and gives it the perfect amount of sweetness. But of course, this depends on how much you put. I typically use one serving of peanut butter per scoop.
And it tastes great!
Not my favorite out of everything above. But definitely worth trying, especially if you’re a peanut butter person.
Double Rich Chocolate After A Few Weeks
I’m sure you can probably guess how this went after a few weeks.
With a basic and original flavor like chocolate, how can you not get bored of it?
Which is what happened…
I did get bored of it.
Chocolate isn’t really the most exciting flavor in the world. But did it taste better or worse?
No. It tasted the same, which is a good thing. If you’re going to buy this though, just make sure to mix it up a bit to keep this protein powder long-lasting.
Optimum Nutrition Double Rich Chocolate Review
Optimum Nutrition Double Rich Chocolate is a staple protein powder. One that you can keep buying over and over. And one that you should because of its flavor and versatility.
You simply can’t go wrong with a flavor like this.
Is it any wonder why Optimum Nutrition even has a 10lb pack you can buy? People (myself included) love this flavor.
And there’s no doubt that I would buy this again.
To put it simply, Double Rich Chocolate is a crowd-pleaser. It’s a flavor that almost no one can hate. It’s also a flavor you can do many things with. Like what? Like mixing it with cereal, yogurt, smoothies, pancakes, cookies, and anything else you can think of.
And it’ll always give you its rich chocolately taste in all of them.
So don’t waste another second.
If you’ve been dying to find a new, good protein powder, and you love chocolate, this is the perfect one for you.

i started muscle blaze whey choclate flavour but today i bought on whey protein gold standard. floavour of double rich chocalate, frm amazon after mixing it was very light in taste nd not thick. Is it original . ??
Darren Wong says
Hey afroz,
Thanks for your comment.
If you ordered from the Amazon link I included in this post, yes, it is original. It’s sold by Optimum Nutrition themselves, and is where I order all of my protein powders.
In regards to taste, yes, Double Rich Chocolate with water can be a bit light in taste. And it should NOT be thick at all. I don’t think any protein powder mixed with just water should ever come out thick. Only creamy. Which is what this flavor is like.
There’s two ways to solve this problem though:
1. Mix your protein powder with less water, or with milk.
2. Or I’d suggest going with Optimum Nutrition’s Extreme Milk Chocolate. (Review)
Hope this helped!

Hi, Darren.
Sorry for barging in.
Of those Proteins I tried, either pure Casein, or multi-component (or complex) Proteins with Casein dominance (60% or more) are actually thick, even when diluted with water. Obviously the more Casein, the thicker the shake. Non-Casein Proteins are quite thin.
As for authenticity, ON’s site has dedicated page. https://www.optimumnutrition.com/en_US/authentic
However, all proteins I bought (all fresh) have black seal with small golden segment and no golden text. Yet when I mailed ON’s support, they told me it’s fine.

Hi, apparently DRC flavor has been changed to an awful tasting one ( according to amazon comments). Have you tried it again more recently? I like extreme milk but with bananas it’s indeed too sweet, looking to buy DRC. Do you still recommend it?
Darren Wong says
Hey Mike,
Thanks for the comment.
I haven’t tried it recently.
I just checked out the reviews on Amazon though, and it seems Optimum Nutrition changed the formula for Vanilla Ice Cream, not Double Rich Chocolate, which I’m already aware of (I always avoid Vanilla Ice Cream).
But if you read the more recent reviews for this flavor specifically, you’ll find more positive ones than negative ones.
There’s also this review:
“Best protein on the market. For everyone saying the formula has changed… as far as the Double Rich Chocolate I’ve been getting for YEARS, there is no change as of a week ago (Jan-2018).”
So I’m sure Double Rich Chocolate is still the same as when I first tried it. Most people writing negative reviews, or reviews claiming the formula changed, may have just received a bad batch, which happens very rarely.
Hope this helped!
Darren

hi is this good for weight loss?
Sammy says
I’m confused between double rich chocolate and mocha cappuccino. I’ll be having protein with water and not milk as I’m in weight loss program. So would like a suggestion. Thanks.

Hi, Darren, long time no see. 🙂
Finally I was able to get my paws on the tub of Double Rich Chocolate, as it was the last of the line from flavours I wanted to try and… I’m confused, honestly.
I’ve read it is a bit light on the flavour, yet the tub I got feels like not Double Rich, but more like Triple Poor. It is not the sweetness (or lack thereof, which I like), just the flavour itself. It feels very diluted, like I mixed a scoop of protein with half a litre of water.
When I poured 200 ml of liquid (as I usually do when assess flavour on all proteins), flavour almost wasn’t there. You know, like you used not a teaspoon of cacao powder for your mug as usual, but those spices spoons that look like scale model of a spoon. Some notes were there, true, but very-very faint.
At first I thought I got old or fake tub. Yet BBE was very good, and according to ON site tub is authentic. Then I though during my long shift work I forgot how ON proteins should taste, so I opened Mocha Cappuccino tub I bought at same store and the flavour was there, exactly as I remembered it: strong, rich, delicious. Same with Extreme Milk Chocolate leftovers (less than a scoop), which is expired, by the way:)).
Next I reduced amount of liquid to 100 ml and only with milk I was able to taste something “chocolatey” not in “trace amount”, but clearly not rich.
As I haven’t ever tried DRC, I have no reference point to compare it with. But I am confused for sure.
Regardless, take care and keep up the good work!:)

Yes, you are absolutely right. The chocolate flavor is weaker than many other chocolate protein powders on the market. For me personally, this is precisely why I love this flavor, because I dislike a too-intense chocolate flavor…..always have.
One of my favorite ON flavors is mint chocolate chip casein. The mint flavor is not very intense, which I find agrees with my palate. And it has tiny pieces of cookies in it. IMHO, it’s much better than cookies and creme. I haven’t tried most of their flavors yet. I did try vanilla ice cream and I like it, but I usually add a little natural vanilla extract and 1 oz of heavy cream to the shake.
