Chances are if you’re reading this post, you saw Optimum Nutrition had a Key Lime Pie flavor and don’t know whether you should try it.
If that sounds like you, you want to read this post to the end because I’m about to show you what Key Lime Pie tastes like in water, milk, and with a banana.
Just like you, I was also unsure about this flavor. It’s a strange one compared to others.
Most protein powder flavors are either a type of chocolate, vanilla, or fruit.
And Key Lime Pie doesn’t fit in any of those categories.
This tastes unlike any protein powder I’ve tried so far. And I’m not just saying that to say it (I explain later).
So if you’re tired of basic protein powders, this will spark your interest.
Read on to find out why…
Key Lime Pie Review: Water
As you would probably agree, one of the things that makes a protein powder top notch is if it tastes amazing in water. So this was the first thing I tried Key Lime Pie with. And it turned out nothing like I expected.
Once I opened the container, the smell shot right up my nose. It has a sharp, acidic note.
Almost exactly like that of a lime. Not a key lime pie.
The reason I’m mentioning its smell is because it’s similar to how it tastes with water.
How does it taste?
It’s foamy, chalky, watery, and a little sour, which is expected. And it wasn’t bad. But what I couldn’t stand was its texture.
Usually, Optimum Nutrition’s protein powders are all smooth and creamy. But Key Lime Pie doesn’t have that same consistency.
Just look at how much it foams up:
Key Lime Pie foams a lot
Besides that though, it does taste like lime. But not a key lime pie. More like just vanilla and lime.
This is a polarizing and acquired taste. You’re either going to love it or hate it.
And I like it. But not because of this…
Key Lime Pie Review: Milk
Key Lime Pie with milk is a completely different story compared with water. Although it still doesn’t have a true key lime pie taste, it tastes much better.
Instead of being chalky, it’s creamy and a lot smoother on the way down.
In regards to taste, it’s almost the same. Just not watery. The lime flavor is still there and it attacks your tongue at different angles.
Whether that’s good or bad really depends on whether you like the sourness of it. But like I said before, you’re either going to love or hate it.
However, milk is a lot more pleasant than water. It’s just a bit hard to mix, unless you use a blender.
Key Lime Pie Review: Milk and Banana
Here’s where things get interesting.
Blending Key Lime Pie with milk and a banana is going to take you through an adventure of flavor (but only if you like key lime pie).
Out of everything I mixed this protein powder with, this was the best.
The banana is like a key that unlocks the treasure chest of flavor within this protein powder.
The effects are twofold…
First being the sweetness of the banana balances out the sourness of the lime. This is a well-known tactic chefs use when cooking. If something is too sour or acidic, they’ll add sugar to tone it down. And if something is too sweet, they’ll add something sour.
And second being the banana gets rid of the chalky texture and gives it more of a Key Lime Pie effect. Imagine eating a real key lime pie made from scratch. Whisked ingredients, baked in the oven, then cooled in the fridge, ready for you to dive in.
But for some strange reason, you only love to eat the delicate and fluffy yellow-greenish custard. That’s what you get when you mix this with milk and a banana.
It’s creamy and sweet. Just like a key lime pie should be.
And if there’s any reason to buy this flavor, this is it.
Key Lime Pie After A Few Weeks
Protein powder usually get boring or disgusting after 3-4 weeks.
However, I got tired of drinking Key Lime Pie after about a week straight.
For two reasons:
- It’s more sour than sweet. Not extremely sour. But not sweet enough for me to drink it all the time
- Key Lime Pie isn’t a versatile flavor. You can’t do anything else but make key lime pie shakes. Compare that to vanilla or chocolate which you can make tens (maybe hundreds) of different recipes.
Now does Key Lime Pie itself, taste nasty after a few weeks? No. The flavor stays the same.
So if you love the taste of key lime pie, you’re in good luck. If not, it still serves you well by mixing up the flavor a bit.
This is good to have when you’re tired of drinking sweet protein shakes.
Optimum Nutrition Key Lime Pie Review
Key Lime Pie is a protein powder you have to take a risk on.
Chances are you never had a protein powder that tasted anything like this (unless you tried a different brand).
This is a one of a kind. And it’s just a unique flavor overall.
But for me, I wouldn’t buy this again. Why?
Because I don’t drink it often.
I only drink Key Lime Pie every now and then to switch up the taste. And when I do drink it, I always mix it with milk and a banana.
It’s seriously the best and most delicious way to drink it.
