Thinking about trying Optimum Nutrition Salted Caramel?
Well this review is going to show you what this flavor tastes like in water, milk, with a banana, and more so you can find out whether it’s worth trying.
Now I’ll admit, I’m not the biggest fan of actual salted caramel.
In fact, I rarely have it other than when it’s sometimes mixed in with my ice cream. And even that is maybe once a year.
So why did I decide to get this protein powder?
Other than the obvious fact that I need it to write this review, it was also one of their more recent flavors that just came out and received quite the attention from gym-goers.
So without further ado, here was my first impression…
Salted Caramel Review: Water
Before I get into how it tastes, let me first start by saying that when I opened this container of protein powder, I was blasted with a strong artificial smell.
A bit of caramel notes in there but overall, it wasn’t the most pleasant aroma.
However, I continued on anyway.
I poured a glass of water and one scoop of whey into my shaker cup and mixed it. In regard to mixability, it wasn’t the best. Some clumps of powder was stuck to the wall of my cup which I couldn’t get off.
As I took my first sip, I wasn’t too surprised.
Optimum Nutrition Salted Caramel is smooth, sweet, and has a nice caramel flavor but it wasn’t the strongest. This protein powder has more of a peanut butter taste instead. Also a bit artificial tasting, I’m not the biggest fan of this just yet.
But let’s see how this does in milk…
Salted Caramel Review: Milk
With milk, Optimum Nutrition Salted Caramel takes on a new face as I expected.
Adding one cup of milk with one scoop of whey, I had a delicious shake on my hands. Although there was still some difficulty in getting all the protein mixed in.
Nevertheless, I was in for a treat.
The milk really brought out the caramel flavors this time. It reminds of me of those Drumstick ice cream cones that have a gooey caramel center. Imagine that caramel mixed with milk and that’s what you have here.
Creamy, sweet, and flavorful, I can go for this any time of the day. Whether it’s after a workout or not, this always tastes great.
But what if we add a banana to the mix?
Salted Caramel Review: Milk & Banana
Now that I know this protein powder tastes good with milk, I assume it would taste even better with a banana.
Well let’s see…
As I blended all three ingredients together in my Nutribullet, I was left with a creamy, thick shake. Once again, there were problems mixing all the protein powder together.
So how did it taste?
Wonderful.
It was creamy, thick, and the flavors complemented each other very nicely. But after several sips, I couldn’t tell what I was drinking anymore. It was as if the caramel flavor and banana just disappeared, and all I was left with was sweetened milk.
Don’t get me wrong though, I enjoyed the shake from beginning to end. I just wished the caramel flavor was more pronounced.
After A Few Weeks
After drinking this protein powder daily for a few weeks now, I can’t say I enjoyed every bit of it (at least in water).
With water, Salted Caramel isn’t the best.
After some time, it begins to taste a bit sickening. The flavor is very sweet and almost sticky like actual caramel and that just doesn’t sit well on my palate.
However, in milk, I’ll never get tired of it.
It’s just too good. And what’s even better is there’s no other Optimum Nutrition flavor that tastes similar to this one.
Optimum Nutrition Salted Caramel Review
When it comes to Optimum Nutrition Salted Caramel, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re a big fan of caramel.
It has a nice caramel flavor (not so much of the salted part though), and is also sweet and slightly “sticky” in texture.
For best results, mix this protein powder with milk and other ingredients of your choice.
Mixing this with only water isn’t the greatest.
It’s drinkable but not something I really look forward to which is why I personally wouldn’t buy this again.
The good news, however, is this flavor is available in smaller container sizes. This way, you don’t have to spend much and possibly waste it.
