I hate Optimum Nutrition Vanilla Ice Cream.
It’s one of the first flavors. In fact, it may be THE first flavor they’ve came out with. And through the years, its flavor changed a lot…
Vanilla Ice Cream is the basic vanilla shake you’ve all had. But as you know, every company does it different. If you take this brand and compare it to another, it won’t taste nearly the same.
In a second, I’m about to show you how Optimum Nutrition Vanilla Ice Cream tastes in water, milk, milk and a banana, and peanut butter.
Let’s first start with water…
Vanilla Ice Cream Review: Water
As always, first shake is always with water. Because if it tastes great with just that, this is likely to be a winner. So I prepared myself a quick drink.
Not to my surprise, I didn’t like it. I’ve tried this before in the past, and wasn’t a fan then either.
Why?
It’s not because I hate vanilla. But this flavor is just overly sweet.
What you’ll taste when you try it, is not much vanilla, but sugar. Yes! Plain sugar. This protein shake doesn’t taste close to an actual delicious vanilla ice cream. Instead, it’s almost like drinking water and sugar mixed together.
Now, I’m not saying it doesn’t taste like vanilla at all. There’s a bit in there. But you won’t be able to help but notice the sugariness of it.
So far, not so good.
However, I can see why some may like it. Especially if they have a sweet tooth. Because with something like Vanilla Ice Cream, you probably won’t have to worry about sweets for the rest of the day.
Vanilla Ice Cream Review: Milk
Water gave me no hope. But I was excited to stir this into a glass of milk. Maybe the milk will help bring out its vanilla flavor.
And guess what?
It did just that!
Compared to water, this is almost entirely different.
Still, it is very sweet. There’s no getting by that, no matter what you mix it in. If anything, it’s a bit sweeter in milk. But that’s not what makes this taste good…
In milk, you get more of the vanilla that was missing when it was in water. And of course, the texture is a lot thicker and creamier.
By now, it’s safe for me to say that if you want to drink Vanilla Ice Cream, it’s best to drink it with anything besides water.
I don’t see how it can get any worse from here.
Let’s see if this holds true in the next shake…
Vanilla Ice Cream Review: Milk & Banana
Now, you might have a good idea of how this is going to taste. It’s nothing new.
I blended a cup of milk, one scoop of protein powder, and a banana. Here’s how it tasted…
Amazing!
Like the banana milkshakes you buy from stores, that’s what you get with this. Sweet, creamy, and delicious.
After a horrible experience drinking this with water, this has made up for it.
You taste the banana and vanilla perfectly blended together for a sweet, creamy concoction that will remind you of those good old hot summer days. Perfect!
Vanilla Ice Cream Review: Peanut Butter
With peanut butter I wasn’t really looking forward to it. And I didn’t expect much from it either.
I mixed one scoop with water, with one tablespoon of peanut butter, and drank.
To my surprise, it was actually pretty good.
I was thinking it would be overly sweet. But in fact, it was just right. It seems the peanut butter’s fattiness and nuttiness balanced it out.
Overall, it’s tasty and creamy.
Still not as good as with a banana and milk though.
Vanilla Ice Cream After A Few Weeks
After a few weeks you can probably guess what my thoughts are.
I didn’t like it.
Unless I mixed it in a nice milkshake, I would hate it every time. And this was only after one week.
I’ve found myself grabbing my other protein powders instead of this one all the time. But would stick to this anyway just for the sake of this review (which was torture for me).
The taste is boring, artificial, and sickly sweet.
This may not be the case for you however.
I know a lot of people who like sweet. And if that’s you, take my opinion with a grain of salt.
Optimum Nutrition Vanilla Ice Cream Review
Optimum Nutrition Vanilla Ice Cream has been selling for years – ever since they started. So there must be something about it that people like. For me though, I just can’t come to like it.
I’m sure over the years, they’ve changed the formula for this flavor. And probably tasted much better in its early stages.
But would I buy this again?
I wouldn’t. Ever.
My mantra is – if it doesn’t taste good in water, it’s not worth buying. There are some exceptions however. But Vanilla Ice Cream isn’t one of them.
